in Venezuela

In 1498, Christopher Columbus, in his letter to Isabella and Ferdinand, referred to Venezuela as paradise on earth. Our production coordinator in Venezuela says that this is due to the large quantity of fresh water near the salty seawater.

The country was under Spanish colonization from 1522 until 1811 when it became one of the first Spanish colonies to declare independence. The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela boasts a 2800-kilometer coastline, and our journalist fixer knows exactly where to secure your best interviews here.

Caracas

Our location scout discovered Quinta De Anauco, a beautifully preserved colonial house. This early 1900th-century house holds everyday artifacts and furniture in its original setting.

Hacienda La Vega is a historic colonial residence that you can now rent for events. On its grounds, you can find the ruins of an old cane mill, gardens full of acacias and cedars, fountains, and terracotta-paved paths. Our production coordinator in Venezuela believes it looks right out of a movie with rich traffickers, with its palm trees and rough charm.

Guayana

Guayana is home to a lot of beautiful waterfalls, but if our production coordinator in Venezuela had to pick just one, it would be Angel Falls. This breathtakingly beautiful waterfall is 16 times the height of Niagara Falls and one of Venezuela’s top tourist draws. The aerial view is best. One never forgets the view of the waterfall turning to almost a mist at the bottom. For another unique experience, you could walk behind Salto el Sapo’s curtain of water, Indiana Jones’ style.

Basilica Nuestra Señora de Chiquinquira is a catholic church with emblematic architecture. Its central attraction is a little table with the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary, Saint Andrew, and Saint Anthony. It was found near the shore of lake Maracaibo more than two hundred years ago. You can walk to Plaza del Rosario de Nuestra Senora de Chiquinquira for a magnificent statue of the patroness of the city. Our journalist fixer can find some devotees to help you learn more about the religious life in the area.

Aragua

Aragua is a state in north-central Venezuela. It is famous for its fertile valleys and beautiful beaches.      Our location scout recommends Santa Teresa Rum, a family-owned rum plantation. It is open to the public at weekends, with tours and tastings. It is the home of arguably Venezuela’s best rum, the ‘1796’ brand, which is carefully aged in oak barrels.

Another interesting find is Rancho Grande Biological Station – an ecological research post run by Venezuela’s Central University.
